Which class is right for you?
Stepping onto the mat for the first time should be welcoming and not feel like a challenge match. Much like learning to drive a car, you don’t just start by “seeing how you do”, you take classes and learn. At Praxis we take pride in our ability to help the brand new beginner navigate the path from novice to experienced practitioner.
Options below are for Adult students. For Kids classes information and scheduling look here!
There are three basic categories of classes for students:
Intro: Brand new beginner - no experience
All Levels: Novice, or beginner with an athletic/competitive background
Intermediate & Advanced: Those with relevant Brazilian Jiu Jitsu experience
If you have experience with Jiu Jitsu and want to try a class, just contact us here.
If you are a trying to decide between the first two categories read on.
Safety is paramount - we don't want people getting hurt. That said, we are trying to learn Jiu Jitsu, not stay home safe on the couch. There is inherent risk in all athletic activity - Jiu Jitsu is no exception. As long as you stay in the lane of your skill and knowledge level - injuries are actually quite uncommon. When people say Jiu Jitsu is hard on them it generally means that; how they approach training is hard on them - not the Jiu Jitsu. Train chill and injuries are quite rare.
The difference between the first two categories is pace and pressure. If you are brand new and want to be able to work through the material in a small group setting without the pressure of a larger class - then the Intro course is for you. If on the other hand you have an athletic/competitive background, (meaning you are coachable and have a decent athletic base), then you can probably jump into the fundamentals classes.
The aim of class is to give you exposure to the technique and training. You don't "win" or defeat the training. The goal isn't to "learn" Jiu Jitsu either. Learning is something that happens over many classes and a lot of exposure. Come train! If getting on the mat is scary for you, then come get enough exposure until it's not so scary. In a good school the students will take care of you as long as you take care of them. Come train and you will develop more skill on the mat than you thought you could.
Jiu Jitsu is an amazingly effective and versatile martial art. Learning it doesn't have to look like fight club. It should be an enjoyable and engaging way to strengthen your mind-body connection and get in shape.
Our academy consists of a student base ranging from experienced competitors to brand new beginners. One thing they all have in common is that at one point they knew as much about Jiu Jitsu as you do right now. The only difference is that they took that first step on the mat and kept coming back.
