Stripe Curriculum
The following is a tool to help you better understand what you need to work on in order to earn a blue belt. If you are already a blue belt or up - it is a good opportunity to solidfy your basics.
It is the basic game we teach broken down into a progressive path to skill aquisition.
These are not checklists - they are self assessment tools. Listed after each technique is a 1-5 numerical grading scale:
1 – No Clue - Don't know
2 – Can, on some basic level, demonstrate with partner. Missing a few steps.
3 – Can perform in live sparring - Consciously & On Purpose
4 – Can teach on demand
5 – Mastery
The idea is that every technique on the assessment gets a date marked on the highest level of recall, (verbal and/or physical), you can articulate or demonstrate. For instance you could go through a sheet and mark todays date on the highest number you score for each technique.
This would allow you to go back and review the techniques you couldn’t recall on command. Marking subsequent assessment dates would allow you to chart progress. Give yourself 3-4 weeks between assessmets and use it to study week to week. This is material we cover on a regular basis - so while you may not know the technique name, you probably have an idea of what it is.
The curriculum is broken down in the folllowing manner;
1st Stripe - Basic Self Defense
2nd Stripe - Basic Jiu Jitsu Defense
3rd Stripe - Basic Offense
4th Stripe - Basic Offense
4th to Blue - Take downs, Prolonged Open Guard, NoGi Game Modifications
Is there are big testing date and process - Not at all. This is just a guide to help you better understand what you need to work on to get your blue belt.
If you get a good handle on the techniques listed here you will have a real well rounded game. Work hard with the material and you will develop the skills of a blue belt and likely earn one in the process!
