Philosophy of our approach

Turn Frustration into Focus

When kids train martial arts the core of what they are working on is developing the ability to turn frustration into focus. The goal of training is not to help kids control everything around them, but rather to control their response to it.

Martial Arts training allows students to develop the self discipline needed, not just to control frustration, but to feel it developing and intuitively channel that into focus. To practice Jiu Jitsu is to practice overcoming adversity. Jiu Jitsu is not just a skill set to be acquired, it is an approach to discipline.

Develop the discipline

Becoming a martial artist means to understand the difference between fighting and beating someone up. You don't learn martial arts so that you can beat people up. You learn martial arts so that you know how to compose yourself and fight for an outcome you believe in. Training also helps kids find the confidence and self respect needed to avoid trouble in the first place.

Catch them doing something good

Our method of instruction begins with the belief that the child's support system, (parents, family, and teachers), hold 100% of the responsibility of the child's education. We believe that children thrive best when they are appropriately supported, encouraged and given the structure and direction to be successful. As the child gains confidence and independence they gradually take over the responsibility for the outcomes they wish to achieve.

Part of this approach comes from the idea; catch them doing something good and reward that. If you are a parent you know that kids are smart - very smart. They are also very observant. They make the choice to engage much more easily if they are self motivated to do so, rather than being prompted and prodded.

Fan the flames

As teachers, our job is to help them find inspiration to find that focus and discipline. We provide an engaging curriculum that gives children the opportunity to learn through play. We have found that focusing on the growth and efforts made by a child goes further in developing resilience than pointing out where they fell short.

Beyond that; stifled joy rarely fans the flames of education. Clever rediretion can. We want to catch them doing good things so they develop a positive attitude and approach to adversity. We realize that this approach requires a special commitment from parents and educators. We want to work with you every step of the way so your child can truly flourish on his or her journey to become a talented martial artist, and a lifelong self-learner.
