Anatomy of an Escape - Part 1

Getting out of a bad situation isn’t about effort alone. You can’t do the wrong thing fast enough, or with enough force or aggression, to compensate for not doing the right thing.

Lost is generally lost.

Stuck is generally stuck.

Flow drills help us practice going the right direction. We often use them to help dial in specific commonly occuring transitions. The drills are generally done with low, but specific, resistance.

The warm ups we do directly tie into the flow drills and the rest of the technique we cover. We don't have warm up’s just so you can get in a work out. The movements help train your coordination in a specific manner - one of maximum efficiency.

I don’t use one set of movements to warm up - then a different set of movements to execute techniques while training. They are the same essential movements.

The question of the day then is: based on the gif below, what do you think the warm up movements were to help with this transition?

Follow up: What transitions are they working on? What are the make it or break it details important to each student, attacking and defending?

After a technical breakdown and drilling it’s time to train it live

Do you see any common threads to the successes and failures in each match?

Generally speaking, you use your hands last in Jiu Jitsu. It might be the first thing to connect, but you should actually try to avoid using your hands until your hips and shoulders are in the right place..

Many times, if you use proper positioning well enough, you don’t even need to use your hands. Here is an example.

Questions:

Based on what you saw, what do you think are the key elements of the esacpe?

How would you organize those elements? Is there an order or priority to them?

What warm up movements might help you practice escaping?
